Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System for the First Time.

The Championships court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships this year.

Players are granted the ability to question specific decisions from the official, mirroring the practice currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can request.

Case in Point

A recent example took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
