The Top Album of 2025: The Artist's Lux Secures the Number One Place.

At first glance, this work may look more like a challenging scholarly examination rather than a new popular music project from an artist who just had a last single featured an international K-pop star. Divided into 4 different sections and performed in 13 tongues, we have a breathtaking classical-tinged album investigating female mystique, religious ascent, and corporal transformation, often via the perspective of various women saints. The dissolution of a love affair—a topic handled with grounded honesty on another major 2025 album—is launched upwards here, supported by the lush sound of a major symphony orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning composer within a vast list of contributors. The pure audacity alone renders the efforts of other pop stars appear rather laughable.

Rising Above Scholarly Exercise

That Lux manages to escape overly academic posturing feels nearly a miracle, and full praise belonging to the artist. While it's not her first project to alchemize the past and modern styles, its scale are far higher here, and the balancing act far more pronounced. What really raises her fourth release, beyond its complex melodies, dense arrangements, and engrained drama, is an essential spirit of fun. Much like the legendary Björk at her peak, there is a wondrous quality to the vocalist's voice which sweeps the listener into its whirlwind. Even when she's tearing your heart in two, the listener still want to stay alongside her through the ride.

A Prime Example of Exuberance

This exuberant energy comes forth clearly during a stunning Italian song about a saint. It luxuriates in a sorrowful melancholy over several minutes. Then, everything drops away, and we hear a spontaneous giggle and a declaration before a comically over-the-top orchestral surge crashes in with cartoonish force. The track immediately shifts into the frenetic track featuring galloping orchestration, an imposing choir, and a surprise role from the artist Björk.

"The magic with this album is that you never quite know—or even wish to predict—where you will go to next."

Nearly every song finishes in a totally distinct place than how it began. One moment explores the fleeting nature of fame with a featherlight orchestration only to disintegrating into electronic cacophony. Another, a song echoing the artist's previous rhythmic work starts out dark and sinister, with menacing vocals, before sudden traditional rhythms and a heavenly choir arrive to smooth its jagged corners.

The Balance Between Experiment and Pop

Another crucial achievement on the album is straddling the gap between bold experimentation and broad accessibility. It is no coincidence that it has become her highest-charting release to break into the upper reaches of key markets: at its core a collection of utterly catchy hits. One track performed primarily in the English language builds around a refrain that feels to collect more and more nagging hooks while it spins skyward. This trick gets echoed on another powerful track that grows and contracts, weaving multiple tunes like an intricate tapestry.

  • A dance-infused song charms via its playful, theatrical flair and an anthemic chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares with cultural honesty of contemporary breakup songs, lambasting a former lover labeled an "emotional bully".
  • Across these tracks, the vocals carry a sharp edge, like a fairy-tale figure hiding a knife: "Gold medal in being a motherfucker / You have the podium of disappointment."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Soul

Lux represents pop on a grand scale, a hungry reach for capital-A Art amid of impending artificial sameness. It eschews self-absorption for sublime transcendence, creating an over-the-top spectacle that masterfully manages its built-in ridiculousness. This is a deep source of buried treasure that takes patience to completely explore but doesn't feels like hard work. Where some major releases of 2025 seemed like a meager meal, Lux is a sumptuous feast at which the guests at it, perhaps intoxicated on sacred drink, flutter between discussions about ancient saints, the profound feeling of heartbreaking sadness, and common stories about hopeless men. It is a modern-day musical from music's truly endlessly creative visionary.
