The NFL has levied a hefty $250,000 fine on Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for what he claims was an “unintentional” obscene gesture made toward fans during a recent game at MetLife Stadium.
Viral video clips appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, but Jones insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“It was regrettable. That was kind of an interaction with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “There was a large group of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, our fans. The whole venue was brimming with excitement for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the signal was entirely accidental, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I just showed the wrong digit,” he remarked. “The action was accidentally performed. This is sincere. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. But it got corrected rapidly.”
Historical Precedent for Owner Penalties
This incident isn’t the first time an league proprietor has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Previous examples include:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at fans in January 2024.
